There were a lot of blacks there, but they were nice blacks.
Don't say to me:
My boss is Jewish, ya know, he's cheap.
Don't say to me :
I couldn't understand her on the phone, she was black.
Don't say to me :
He's Italian, he must be connected.
Don't say to me:
He's a dot head or point out his turban, because he embraces his heritage, even though people point and stare and criticize him every day in this country and it would be easier for HIM if he blended in..he still holds his head up high and was told 'to come to this country means to practice his beliefs without prejudice.'
or he's gay, because some of my friends are and have been made fun of most of their lives
or he's spic, because my son is
or he is fat, because my brother struggles with it
It's gonna sound weird, but even though I'm gay as shit, it took me a while to realize what a stupid concept is was to categorize and label people.
It took moving to Atlanta for me. That was the best thing I ever did. White and black people and gay and straight people and Christians and Jews and Muslims all getting along and having represention on a city council in a southern toen??
I really really really feel blessed here. I'm kinda gushing because its Pride weekend here, so I'm getting a little more nutty and sentimental than usual because I'm so proud and thankful that I ended up in a place like Atlanta.
My point...it can happen. People can get over themselves and act right when they are in an environment where they feel comfortable in their skins and can GET OVER THEMSELVES.
So anyways...Happy 4th to you and CH and the clan!
by Lookin' (PM , CC ) on Friday July 4, 2008 @ 6:56 PM
You were on my mind when I wrote this Colo.
This past week several people who obviously don't know me well made 'black' comments. And what pissed me off is that, how do they know...maybe my husband is black ???
A friend of mine has an unwed pregnant daughter....her grandson will be multiracial and she cried telling me how she was raised prejudice and how hard it was to tell her family about the baby.
I said to her, this child is a blessing and a lesson for many people in your life...you will fall madly in love with your grandbaby and so will the rest of your family.
So I thought of you and how you must encounter these ignorant people who make comments about blacks and how it must hurt you. And I thought of the times I hear people say spic and think of my own son possibly facing prejudice...somethhing I never experienced firsthand.
So to anyone who reads this and has something negative or prejudice to say, don't assume everyone feels what you feel and don't assume you are not hurting someone very deeply.
And my question is ...what do you say to neighbors or people you just meet who say such things ? People who really know me, know better than to speak that way, but how do we change a perfect strangers opinion and thought process?
I know I am rambling but I have been very sensitive to this more and more..
Love ya Colo...and love your little grandson.. Lucy

Oh my gosh Azron...you just reminded me of 60 minutes last Sunday. Did you happen to see it ?
It was about how Christians (Catholics mostly) are all being killed in Iraq for their beliefs...
June 29 Vicar: Dire Times For Iraq's Christians As his flock is murdered and dispersed, the vicar of Baghdad says Christians are worse off now than under Saddam or perhaps ever in history. Scott Pelley reports on the persecution of Iraq's Christians. More... Video: Iraqi Christians In Peril Explore: Eye on Religion
For example if a man believes in Jesus, his wife and children are tortured and killed.
I mean what year is this ???? Christianity originated over 2,000 years ago in the middle east.
If you don't mind, what country of birth are you ?
My husband became a citizen in the 90's I beleive..(from Cuba) He preaches to EVERYONE that this is the best country in the world. Amercians born here take that for granted...

Lucy
I have been blogging for over 2 1/2 years with only a few weeks off - so I don't know where you have been but I have been here - Maybe you need to redecorate less - and venture out more
I will be leaving California in 2 weeks and headed for Idaho - you have missed alot of stuff - but more to come I am sure Take care - and quit sniffing that paint!
by Lookin' (PM , CC ) on Saturday July 5, 2008 @ 12:06 AM
Lucy,
I missed 60 minutes last week, but I heard about it - it is quite terrifying - I am working with some of the Christian refugees from Iraq - they talk about terrible torture they suffered in Iraq. these are middle class people - speak English quite well, college-educated.
by Lucy. (PM , CC ) on Saturday July 5, 2008 @ 12:59 AM
You know, if we just learn to consistantly say things that we know will be found approving of others, we will appear to be making lots of friends. But in fact, because our finger is always checking the wind and our ear is to the ground, we miss out on the adventure of being ourselves....our real selves.
If all this were true for you, it must be an inexplicable error that you block my dearest friend and alter ego, GECKO.
by Stealth (PM , CC ) on Saturday July 5, 2008 @ 3:15 AM
Lucy,
I think there are several ways to help:
1. Pray - Pray for the Christians in Iraq and for those resettling in US.
2. Donate money - Refugee Program, c/o Pat Gillem, Catholic Charities, 1825 W. Northern Ave. Phoenix, AZ 85021
3. Volunteer - see if there is a refugee program in your community who is resettling Iraqi Christians (if you tell me your city, I can probably tell you). Volunteering can involve mentoring, teaching, collecting household goods and clothes for these people who come with a small suitcase and their few precious memories of Iraq. Just befriending them - helping them get to their appointments, taking them to church, helping find their way around town. If you work with a refugee family, you will be friends for life!
4. Stop the war. Our war is what created these refugees! Interestingly enough, these refugees are such a hot political potato that they seldom stay in a refugee camp in Jordan or Syria for more than a month. The US government KNOWS it created this mess - and it is not about to let it become an international incident. Jordan or Syria DO NOT want these people around for the next 8-15 years which is the average time for a refugee to be in a refugee camp anywhere else in the world.
by AZRON (PM , CC ) on Saturday July 5, 2008 @ 9:58 AM
Hi, Lucy. I have to admit that I do have one prejudice. A##holes. They come in all shapes, sizes, colors, and genders. And there are way too many of them still roaming around.
by Lucy. (PM , CC ) on Sunday July 6, 2008 @ 1:03 AM
I have some videos of Katt Williams that I am dying for you see. Warning: They have a lot of GD and MF and N words in them, but they are FREAKIN hilarious. I think you and CH will be rolling on the floor as much as I was when I saw them last night. Can I post them here? You can delete them if you think they are too much. T
by Dalpha (PM , CC ) on Sunday July 6, 2008 @ 2:17 AM
Funny thing Lucy...I never encounter prejudice regarding my grandson. Most of the racism I hear is of the free floating variety and not really directed to anyone else....although there is a fair amount of Blck /Hispanic friction in the local government levels here....Maybe because I refuse to have it around me...My thought was that a lot of it was gone....I do think the Rev Wright controversy has brought stuff to the surface again.
With hip hop and rap and all the media I think that there is less.Prejudice is really fear of the unknown...
I did worry how my grandson would be treated...but he has had nothing negative directed at him. Hopefully he will be raised color blind...And if he isn't taught hate at home he won't be likely to walk around a victim or a hater!
Great Post Lucy! I don't know if prejudice will ever cease as long as there is hate in this world. It comes in so many different varieties that most people have become oblivious to it anymore.
I wish for the world peaceful coexistance by all and for all.
I just had the most amazing weekend at the Cherokee Pow-Wow! Totally awesome Lucy! Glad to see you posting girl. You are missed.
by PolarB (PM , CC ) on Monday July 7, 2008 @ 7:04 AM
This is a fantastic post, Lucy! I think there is way too much hatred in this world. I know that each & every person has some type of prejudice. They might not realize or even admit it, but it's there. Some are just way too outspoken about it. You're right about "how do they know that I...". That happens so much. One might think it for even a brief moment, but it should be kept to themselves & not spoke aloud.

Hi Lucy Doll, I love this post! I especially like the part where you say "even though I may THINK it too, just for a moment..." It shows how ingrained that nasty racism and other "isms" are in our minds, and how we have to be on guard against our own evil thoughts - so we sure don't need someone else's urging us on, right? We're supposed to be helping each other UP here, not dragging each other down!! I've missed you! ~Daisy

Yeah that is kinda what I was trying to say Colo. That people make off color jokes and really don't know you or I and don't realize we may or may not have a person in our family who they are attacking.
I mean how many times have I been in a situation where people used the word Spic and I had to say to them....um, my son is a SPIC.
That's what I meant...people have diarhea mouth and don't realize how insulting they are and who's feelings they may be hurting.
by Lucy. (PM , CC ) on Saturday July 19, 2008 @ 10:55 PM
I think people are becoming more politically correct. Not that they aren't thinking things they shouldn't but at least censoring themselves as to not hurt people's feelings.
by kktaylorcc (PM , CC ) on Saturday July 19, 2008 @ 11:01 PM
Yeah, I think we all have a smiggen of prejudice in us and we have to acknowledge that if we are human..lol ! And that's where our growth comes from.
I went to a baby shower today for a friend of mine's daughter. The child will be mixed race and her Christian family is not happy. I was kinda shocked. So I told her once the baby comes they will fall MADLY in love with him and that this is a lesson for all of them.
What can be more precious and more of a blessing then a new baby?

Have a great weekend!!
I know we have a sister church in Haiti but I will ask about other countries as well...thank you so much.
