Wed - May 3 - The Discovery Channel Isnt' Just for Nerds

The Discovery Channel

It's Not Just For Nerds !

Lately I have been watching a lot of the Discovery Channel.

It's not just for nerds, you know!

Here are some of my favorite shows that I Tivo, check them out if you can.

I SHOULDN'T BE ALIVE

This is a great true life reenactment show of how people are pushed to the brink and face death due to some kind of weird accident or occurrence.  I always think to myself, I would have given up by now!  But they always manage to persevere to live to tell their story.

GOING TRIBAL

Now this guy is a nut who hosts the show.  He goes on indigenous adventures and adapts to tribal customs.  He eats their food, goes barefoot in the jungle and participates in all kinds of weird stuff.  One show he was eating some kind of natural LSD type of thing with the natives and was tripping out.  Another one, he got his wack-a-doodle pierced with a stick???

DEADLIEST CATCH

Fishermen up in Alaska go out on their boats to catch king crab legs.  Sounds boring?  Anything but.  You will have a new found respect for the men that catch your meal!

CASH CAB

Now this is funny.  A guy drives a NYC cab and hosts a game show right in his cab!  Passengers board his cab and have no idea they are in the Cash Cab!  The questions start out easy and progressively get harder as the passengers get a chance to win cold hard cash money.  The funniest part of the show is the reaction of the contestants when they get in and all these lights and whistles start going off in the cab & they have no idea what is going on; kinda looks like disco gone mad!  New Yorkers are not too surprised but tourists are always shocked at first.

Here's a sample quiz from the show....how did you do?

DIRTY JOBS

The host of the show goes around experiencing the most dirtiest jobs he can find for a day.  One show he was in the sewers of NY with rats, another one he was an exterminator trying to kill millions of cockroaches and then another he was artificially inseminating a female horse.  Let's just say he was up to his ELBOW in that job!

Check it out kids !

 Tuesday - Question

My question today is do you agree or disagree with the situation of the illegal immigrants?

In my opinion, what they are doing here is illegal, thus ILLEGAL aliens.  I'm not sure why they just don't take the proper channels to become US citizens.  Unless I am missing something, to me it doesn't seem that difficult.  It just takes time and probably a lot of paper work.

Our country at this point has to be very cautious of who comes in and out of our borders.

I watched CNN last night and apparently these people do not pay Federal Income Tax.  How is that fair?

I have nothing against people seeking out the American Dream.  We are all children of immigrants, all of our ancestors are immigrants unless we are of 100% American Indian dissent.

I am open to anyone explaining the other side of the coin to me, because I just don't understand the difficulty.

I also know first hand these people work for minimum wage or less and work very hard for what they make.  Please don't try to explain that to me, because I do indeed get that.

People from foreign countries can become U.S. citizens if they complete a process called naturalization.

To be naturalized, a person must meet certain requirements:
· Be at least 18 years old
· Have lived in the U.S. as a legal resident for at least 5 years
· Be of good moral character and loyal to the U.S.
· Be able to read, write, speak and understand basic English
· Have basic knowledge and understanding of the history, government structure and the Constitution of the U.S.
· Be willing to take an oath of allegiance to the U.S.

Naturalization consists of three steps.

1 - Filing an application

An application to file a petition for naturalization is obtained at no charge from the local Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) office. Three forms are needed. Application form - It must be filled out completely and truthfully. Applicants will be asked to give their answers under oath when they appear for the examination. If the answers are not truthful, the applicant may not be granted citizenship. Biographic information sheet - It contains information similar to the application form. Fingerprint chart - Applicants need to fill in personal information (such as name, address and birth date) on the fingerprint chart. Fingerprints can be taken at a police station, sheriff's office or some INS offices. The applicant must sign the fingerprint chart in the presence of the person taking the fingerprints. The person taking the fingerprints signs the chart also. Along with the application, a biographic information sheet and fingerprint chart, the applicant must have three unsigned photographs of his or her face.

2 - Taking the Naturalization Examination

The INS will review the application package and schedule an interview for the applicant. The examiner will ask applicants questions about their applications and will help file the petition for naturalization, which is filed in the naturalization court. Applicants need to pay a fee when filing the petition if they pass the naturalization examination. The examiner asks the applicant some questions about the U.S. system of government and U.S. history to see if the applicant has basic knowledge of these subjects. The applicant does not have to be able to read or write English to pass this part of the examination. To take a quiz including some typical questions immigrants are asked on the U.S. citizenship test, click here. The examiner also will test the applicant's English reading and writing skills by giving a simple dictation test. The applicant also will be asked to sign his or her name in English. Two types of applicants do not have to take the English literacy examination. These are applicants who are physically unable to read or write or who are 50 years old or more and have lived in the U.S. as a permanent legal resident for 20 years or more.

3 -Appearing for a court hearing

After the examination is complete and the petition is filed, the applicant must appear in court for a final hearing. The examiner tells the judge that the applicant is qualified for naturalization and should be made a citizen. If the examiner believes that the applicant is not qualified for naturalization, the applicant can appear at the final hearing, with a lawyer, if desired. The applicant can ask the judge for citizenship. The judge will listen to the applicant's reasons and will decide on naturalization. If an applicant cannot appear to meet the examiner to file the petition or cannot appear in court because of an illness or physical disability, it may be possible for other arrangements to be made. When it has been decided that an applicant is to become a citizen, the applicant must take an oath of allegiance or loyalty to the US. Upon taking the oath, the applicant promises to support and defend the US Constitution and the laws of the United States of America. After the oath of citizenship is taken, the judge signs an order granting naturalization. The new citizen is given a certificate or naturalization-the official paper showing the person is a U.S. citizen.

The Oath:
I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I will bear arms on behalf of the United States when required by law; that I will perform noncombatant service in the Armed Forces of the United States when required by the law; that I will perform work of national importance under civilian direction when required by the law; and that I take this obligation freely without any mental reservation or purpose of evasion; so help me God. In acknowledgement whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature.

Prayer for the Addicted

Computer Addicted

God, grant me the serenity
To accept a post I cannot change,
Courage to walk past the computer
without turning it on
when I'm running late for work,

Let me pass by my computer

And the wisdom to know
the difference between
"come to bed now"
meaning "let's have some fun"
and "come to bed NOW"

come to bed now sweetie

meaning
"that computer has got to go"!

That computer has to go
