...the sense of community, that big invisible “Welcome” sign that hangs in the window of this place is just so incredible, the way everyone finds their voice here so quickly, it never ceases to amaze me....
Standing in the rising heat of Carson City, I check the slip of paper again, making sure I’m at the right address. Sure enough, this is it. With slight trepidation, I knock softly, hoping I’m not arriving too early at the “Tomb”. I listen for footsteps in my anticipation of meeting a Blogstream favorite, when the door slowly creaks open…and there he is…the man himself…

Scratch is that you? Gosh, it’s so great to finally meet you and thank you for allowing me this interview. Are you ready to get started? I hope I’m not too early.
No Puppy, its not too early at all, in fact its an honor to have you here in The Tomb anytime. Just let me dust off the cob webs and we can get this shindig started.

Wonderful! Hey, your new futon looks even better than the pictures on your blog. I’ll just make myself comfy there. Oops,….uh….there aren’t any dragons under there, are there? Just where does Asa sleep since you “disassembled” your old couch?

Uh.. no he's got a condo uptown someplace now I think.. Have a seat Pup, lemme open the drapes. Uh.. don't mind the dust…can I offer you some coffee or a brew of some kind?
Coffee would be great! Mmm, that’s delicious. You make a mean cup of java, my friend. You’re a gracious host, especially since we all know that the famous “Scratch” is definitely not a morning person. Okay, since you’re ready, can you tell our readers what brought you to the “Stream” in the first place and what you enjoy the most about it?
I was listening to Leo Laporte’s radio show on the internet and he mentioned the word “Blog” I wasn’t sure what that meant so I googled it, and ended up cruising different sites looking for a place to try to settle into. I tried looking really hard at three or four but decided The blogstream was the place for me, I just needed to write again and it seemed like the perfect fit.
As for what I enjoy most about it? Probably the sense of community, that big invisible “Welcome” sign that hangs in the window of this place is just so incredible, the way everyone finds their voice here so quickly, it never ceases to amaze me.
Welcome sign….very well put, my friend. I know I speak for many when I say that I’m very glad you found the Stream for a place to settle. You are now one of the cornerstones of our little “community” and definitely a favorite of many.
I remember when we all had plain text and white backgrounds, but we still had great times. One of the best things about Blogstream in the beginning were the spontaneous “blog-fests” that happened periodically. Kind of what I commonly refer to as “comments gone wild”. Which of these do you remember that make you chuckle the most and why?
Out of all of them? That’s a tough one. I got a kick out of all of them, but the two that I can narrow it down to is “The German Helmet hat” incident, aka “Blogstream Court” and of course that whole Penny roll thing was kind of funny, although the thought of seeing Diesel in a thong is more than a little scary. The people involved made them priceless.
Haha, I had a feeling you would mention the “German Helmet” thing and glad you did because it’s a favorite of mine too. Ice and I both laughed for hours during that one and I have to hand it to you for being a very good sport, which made it all the better. And for the penny rolls, well…..I’m truly sorry about that incident and I promise it was purely an accident. Again, you were a great sport about that. Actually, BELLE got me drunk, so I have to plead temporary insanity anyway. My first memory of one such blogfest was the party at PRANK'S place while he wasn’t home. Now, THAT was some party! Was that Halloween?
And speaking of Halloween, your “Halloween Odyssey” has always been one of my favorites. You’re a very talented man, my friend. Tell me….where did your interest in vampires come from? You have written a lot about them. And what other hidden talents and interests do you have that we haven’t been privy to so far?
You mean besides the voices in my head? (joking) I saw Dracula with Bela lugosi when I was ten and I was hooked. I just didn’t like the traditional weaknesses of the vampires in the movies and I decided early that if I ever wrote about a vampire, they were going to be uniquely different than those in the movies, none of the traditional weaknesses, no garlic, no cross, etc.. the daywalker thing had already been done, but I did it anyways.. A vampire that can come out in the daytime? How scary is THAT ? And as for any other interests that I have? I like to doodle with art sometimes, and play around with the Strat once in awhile, other than that I pretty much just keep to myself and write.

Vampires in the daytime….now that is a scary thought. Geez, I’ve got goosebumps just thinking about it, but I think I may still have Asa in the back of my mind. The backs of my legs feel a little warm, so are you absolutely sure he’s moved out? Uh oh, I just had another thought. That big beautiful tiger wouldn’t happen to be under this futon, would he?

Mr P? naw.. He’s too big for the futon, you might want to watch out for the scorpions and tarantulas though.
Uh….er….uh…..ya know, I think I’d rather stand for a while…gulp. There, that’s better. I think I just need to stretch my legs a little after the trip here.
Uh….now where was I? (looking around nervously)….uh…oh yeah! You’re a single man and seem to be very comfortable with your life. But I’m gonna put you on the spot a little, if that’s okay. Can you describe the perfect woman for you? And since I can see the twinkle in your eye about the result of your little “scorpions and tarantulas” remark, I’m gonna throw in a little extra challenge for ya. Is there a woman on the blog that closely resembles that perfect woman or a combination of the attributes of a few of them?
Elvira.. Yeah.. She’s hot.. Lookee there ma, your baby boys grinning from ear to ear.. There’s a new hottie in his life.. And she isn’t a Dragon, Tiger, or any other kind of creepy crawly.. If there’s a woman on the Stream that has ANY of her attributes you tell ‘er uncle Scratch has a present for her.

Hmmm…..Elvira, huh? Okay, I was wondering how the crafty Scratch would sidestep that one and you didn’t disappoint.
(Sorry girls, I tried).
Now…..I’ve noticed in your blog that you have a strong sense of conviction and a very “protective” sense toward children, women and animals. Who or what do you attribute such an admirable quality?
And….uh…..just what the heck is that thing I see moving over there by that chair?

My Mom. A stronger human being I’ll probably never know, she went through that whole abuse thing with my step father the whole time I was growing up. I had a growth spurt when I was seventeen, and one day they got to drinking a bit and he smacked her. I lost it and threw him about ten or fifteen feet I was so pissed. All I really remember doing after that was screaming at him with every ounce of rage that I could muster.. He didn’t want to play that game any more after that..
I absolutely hate abusers of any kind.. The emotional scars that they leave behind on their victims are still there long after the physical ones have healed. Women, children, and even some men, nobody should have to live through that.. I’ve seen it in animals too, beaten down so bad that they flinch every time you raise your voice, even if its in laughter.. I hate that.
My heart goes out to you and your mother. And I’m sorry you had to experience such a thing, but I do believe it has made you a very caring person and it shows strongly in your writing. I think there are too many stories just like yours nowadays and I think I speak for many of us when I agree with you wholeheartedly about bullies and abusers. Thank you for your candor, my friend. I could visit with you all day about that, but I’m sure you have other plans and Ice is waiting for me back at the NR jet.
So, let’s move to the first of “THE” questions that we all must answer…..What five people from the Stream would you most like to meet and why?
Oh Pits.. Only five?.. Well I can’t do only five because there are so many that I would like to meet, I have made so many wonderful friends here on the Blogstream, so it really wouldn’t do any of you justice to choose only five. How about I just narrow the field, I’m going to borrow a page from our lovely friend Daisy’s book and do five of the newer bloggers.
(All names are also links....click the name and it will bring you to their blog site.)
#1- SHERRY'S CHERRIES
I think meeting Sherry of "Raindrops Makes Things Beautiful" would be a blast, she has a great sense of humor and doesn’t seem to take herself too seriously.
#2 RITA B
Rita of "Momma Never Told Me", because she just has all of those qualities in a person like the kind that I grew up knowing, she seems so nice, and yet you wouldn’t want to mess with her too much. I know she’s been here since November, but I just had to put her in there she’s an important part of this community .
#3 MR. ORNERY
Well what can you say about Mr O. of "Mr. Ornery's Corner"? He just has that kind of sly sense of humor that puts me on the floor laughing. You never know what to expect out of Mr O.
#4 CITIZEN ZANE
Citizen Zane of “Like My feelings Are Observed”, just because he seems like someone that would be very interesting to sit and talk too.
#5 QUIOXTE

Quioxte of “Hot Flashes” is another woman with a wicked little sense of humor. And she seems to know how to have fun with everything. Its important, to be able to laugh.
Of course the choices really come in no particular order I would really like to meet so many.
Great choices! I’m familiar with all of these and have to agree with your selection. And I agree about the “only five” thing. I cheated on my interview and got away with it, so I was willing to let you slide too.
Okay, last but not least, what cd’s are currently in your player?
And uh….you never did tell me what that thing is that seems to be scurrying around under that chair? (inching toward the door).
What?.. Who?.. HIM?? Damn bill collectors.. How many times do I gotta bury you man?
Huh? Oh.. Yeah right.. The cd thingy.. five cd’s are in heavy rotation in the Tomb right now, that sort of reflect my taste in music..
1 - The Essential Leonard Cohen
2 - Elegant Gypsy by Al DiMeola
3 - When A Guitar Plays The Blues by Roy Buchanan
4 - The Reunion CD by Cream
5 - The Best of John Hiatt
I’ve been told that I have strange taste in music.. but I mostly listen to whatever strikes my mood at the time I’m listening.
By the way, I sincerely hope your back feels better my friend.
(wide eyed) Okie dokie….uh…
Oh hey, you’re taste in music is not stra..uh..unusual at all, my friend.
Oh come on, you wouldn’t really bury…uh…er..well, never mind.
You do have a wide variety there, for sure, but that’s right down my alley, so I totally agree on that. Good music choices too! Some I’m not familiar with, but I’ll be looking them up for a listen because Ice and I are always open to a great new song we haven’t heard. Thank you for that.
And thanks for the well wishes also. I do think I’m making a little progress every day and I have a lot of great friends like you pulling for me, so there ya go! Can’t ask for better than that.
Is there anything you’d like to add or comment on?
No I really can’t really think of anything else off hand that needs to be said, except thank you Pup for considering me for this interview thingy. I’m flattered really. And thank you for being a friend to me and so many others here on our little stream..
Oh and don’t mind HIM, I’ll bury him again later.. and if you see Elvira.. well.. you know send her by.. Woof.. Woof... Woof !
Thanks for coming to The Tomb Pup!
The pleasure is all mine, for sure. And if I run across Elvira, I’ll certainly relay the message. And since you’ll be taking care of uh…“Him”, I want to thank you for taking the time to let all of us on the Stream get to know the great “Scratch”, aka "Scratchomo", aka "Scratchy", aka "Uncle Scratch", a little better.
You’ve been a gracious host and since I’m already at the door, I’ll just let myself out and get out of your hair. Thank you so much for this opportunity and I’ll get this on the wire to Lucy at the Blogger Enquirer today for next week’s issue. Bye now, and best of wishes to you, my friend.
(dialing cell phone)
ICE ! I did it! I got a great exclusive interview with the famous “Scratch” and I’m soooo excited. Can you calm Sugar down so I can hear you? Thanks….
You’ve got the jet fired up? Great!
